Measurement Guide

How to Measure

Accurate measurements keep quotes and installs on track.

1

Measure the Width

Measure the horizontal distance where your pergola will span. For attached pergolas, measure from the house wall outward. Add 6-12 inches on each side for overhang.

2

Measure the Projection

Measure how far out from the wall (or between posts) the pergola will extend. Standard projections are 8ft to 20ft.

3

Determine the Height

Measure from the ground to where you want the bottom of the pergola beams. Minimum recommended height is 8ft for comfortable clearance. For attached models, measure to the mounting point on your wall.

4

Check for Obstructions

Note any obstacles: light fixtures, HVAC units, windows, downspouts, or trees. Take photos and include them with your quote request.

Pro Tips

  • Always measure twice in different spots — surfaces aren't always perfectly level
  • For attached pergolas, check that your wall can support the load (wood stud or masonry)
  • Check local building codes — many jurisdictions require a permit for outdoor structures regardless of size
